Deer Parks Annual Settlers Day. A parade, Day at the Park with Class Reunions, Arts and Crafts and lots of Eats.
A tribute to The Old Settlers Picnic of yesteryear and to today's Settlers Day at Deer Park, WA. The fourth Saturday of July annually.
We have not confirmed this parade picture is indeed an Old Settlers Picnic Parade, but its a good bet that it was. An indepth investigation is ongoing. A L. Zimmerer photo.
I love a parade. The information written is very difficult to read, but it appears to say, Mr. Brad Copel Krick dad. To the right possibly Randle ? Civil War. Let us know if you see something different.
Following the parade and prior to all the people showing up at Mix Park. The park was named after Mr. Earl Mix. He was one of Deer Park's most successful mayors. He also ran the theater and soda fountain & drug store for many years.
Evelyn Warren reunited with Bob Clouse after 58 years. Evelyn is the oldest daughter of Norm and Mildred Warren and neice of centerarian Harold Klauander directly below. Evelyn had one older brother, also named Harold.
Mr. Harold Klauander is nearing the century mark. He rarely misses Settlers Day or Clayton Brickyard Day. He made it to both again this year!
This is Darris Schlieman, raised with his older sisters Darlene and Violet by their parents, Fritz and Norma, on a ranch 2 miles north of Clayton. He spent four years boxing for Deer Park High. He went to State Championships and made it to the finals. That's why he looks so at home in this 1950's boxing robe at Settlers' Day.
According to the Tribune Supplement (Proud to Serve) dated July 25, 2001, Earl Mix arrived in Deer Park from Shelbina, Montana. Earl Mix went from the lumber industry, to being a business proprietor, to be the longest serving mayor of Deer Park. He was mayor for a quarter century. Mr. Mix was honored by naming Deer Park's first park the Earl Mix Park. It is the destination of the Old Settlers Picnic Parade, now Settlers Day Parade. This where people from far and near gather for a gala celebration to honor another successful harvest and thoroughly enjoy each other.

Eldon ( Swede) Hutchins. Swede and Everett Williams were the strikeout kings for the Deer Park Stags baseball team. They struck out as many as 14 in a game. Swede went on to play for the Washington Senators' farm teams. He was called up to the major league team for 24 days. He saw great players, including Harmon Killibrew. He even pitched against Fidel Castro in a minor league game in Florida. He said that when he played for the Spokane Indians he made $600 a month. He still lives in his old home town.
Mr. Art (Clayton) Stelting, veteran of World War II. He was in the United States Marine Corp. He joined the Corp as soon as he turned 18. He spent his Boot Camp in San Diego and shipped out to the South Pacific. He mostly drove landing vehicles. Art said, "It was the best job in the Marines." Perhaps he was the best Marine for the job. Art was born and raised in Clayton. His Mother was a pillar of the Clayton Community Church. His Father was a pillar for the Washington Brick and Lime.
