Civil War Veterans
CIVIL WAR VETERANS IN THE DEER PARK AREA
Civil War veterans in the Deer Park area were honored at various historical celebrations early in the twentieth century including Memorial Day 1, the Fourth of July2 and the Old Settlers Picnic until the last of these veterans passed away. As these individuals were not originally from the area they will be listed alphabetically along with the state unit they served in.
Previous lists of area servicemen have been compiled by both the Deer Park Union newspaper and the Historical Society to honor the service these individuals gave to their country. World War II serviceman have been compiled in lists for Clayton, Deer Park, and Loon Lake and are posted on the Clayton/Deer Park Historical Society's website. A list of World War I veterans is being compiled and will be published in the future.
The data for the Civil War veterans list have been compiled from several sources including Deer Park Union newspaper listings during the various early celebrations of the towns existence as well as cemetery listings from interment.net.

DISCUSSION
The listing of the names of the local Civil War veterans has been assembled from a varied lot of sources. Several of the men whose names are in the cemetery listings were alive in 1913 and 1914 (eg. Coffin and Eickmeyer) and they were not listed in the newspaper articles because they did were not present for the celebrations. With Civil War veteran homesteaders selling their property and moving away from the area and the transient nature of lumber mill-logging workers no list of Clayton/Deer Park area Civil War veterans will ever be complete.
The listings have been checked against several Civil War soldier lists including the pension application listings. It is interesting to note that several of the veterans listed apparently served in the Confederate military and were listed as attending the Deer Park celebrations. Apparently the animosities generated by the Civil War had declined in the 50 plus years leading up to the newspaper listings.
